Flyback transformer temperature

Posted by: ysba on

I'm working in a 40W flyback converter. My design is finished, but I want to know which temperature is usual for such design. Measuring with an IR thermometer, the temperature at the windings is almost 80ºC. Is it high enough to care about? Thanks.

It depends on your input Vac and ambient temperature. If you run at 115Vac room temperature, winding temperature of 80 degree C is a little hot. It may become marginal when you run at 90Vac and 40 degree C ambient temperature (I assume no forced air cooling). You can try to increase the wire gauge for better thermal performance. More information can be found in our reference design documents listed on website.
