Stand alone power supply

Posted by: Brad Carey on

Hi, I've been requested to design a power supply for an industrial application to support:
Universal input 85-295 Vac
Output: 4.5 amps.
Short circuit protection
Overload protection.

Looking for support to determine which family of devices and if there is a reference design to get me going.

Thanks

What is the output voltage?

Is the output voltage really 295 VAC, or did you mean 265 VAC?

24vdc output and 4.5amps

24vdc @ 4.5amps

Thanks.  However. not sure if this is the right starting point.   Bcecause I missed providing some information, my general design requirements are the following.  Product to be used in 120/240 Split, 120/208 3-PH, and 277/480 3-PH.

1. Universal Input:  90-280 VAC

2. Output Voltage: 24 VDC

3. Output Current: 4A

4. Volumes are high, so low cost is key.

Does it have to be the same design for all 3?

277 VAC max is not 280 VAC.... so how can 90-280 VAC be sufficient?

Does it need to have PFC?

Yes, it is the same design for all three.  It's my understanding that in 3-PH systems they will pull input power from just one leg.  I got the customer to provide a spec sheet for what they are currently using.   Apparently, the issue is one of availability and the spec's not being what they want.

PFC would be nice.

For 280 VAC max and ~100W you can use the TOP-JX family:

Browse our design examples page for ~100W flybacks (look for those which use TOPSwitch-HX and JX):

"PFC would be nice" - either your spec requires it or doesn't.  Adding PFC when you don't need it will add cost.  If you do need it, PI has the HiperPFS product:

I have selected a reference design starting point.   I would like to know if the design files for PI Expert are available for the RDK or I just need to enter the basic informaiton again?

Thanks

Sorry they are not, but you can recreate it by entering the values shown in the report.
