PI Expert vs PIXLS

Posted by: RAMAKRISHNAN on

Dear

Will some one clarify the distinction between the PI Expert9.0 and the associated PIxls. Which is best used for a new design? We find the PI exper library has some cores like PQ2620,PQ2020 which are not available on the PIxls. When we use the spreadsheet it Auto selects a different core and even if you use the customise option the transformer construct ion details show only the Auto selected core? How do we deal with this?

PI Expert: an automated, graphical user interface (GUI) driven program that takes power supply specifications and automatically generates a power conversion solution designed around one of Power Integrations' IC families. PI Expert includes complete interactive schematic, bill of materials (BOM), board layout recommendations and detailed electrical parameter tabulations.

PI Xls Designer: PI Xls Designer is a spreadsheet based application that gives the power supply designer more control during the design process. It is not an automated tool.

Custom Transformers in PIXls: on practically all our spreadsheets have the input fields AE, LE, AL and BW. These input fields will allow you to input any core you want. You can simply overwrite the values.

Custom Transformers in PIExpert: go to http://www.powerint.com/en/design-support/pi-expert-design-software and click on the video tutorials link. Once there watch "Component Library" and "Fix Device and Core" videos. Hopefully these will help you out.   If you have additional questions feel free to ask.

Dear Mr.Wesley, Thanks for the input which were very enlightening! We will stick to PI expert for the present. We protyped a 36V,1.8Amp,90V to 300V LED driver using PQ3220 Ferrite transformer with 620mH Lp. The driver works well with PF 0.96 and efficiency 86 to 89%. The Output Current Varies +/-7% when input is varied from 120V AC to 300V AC. Rv1 is 3.9M and Rv2 is 1.2M. Rfb is 124.7K. We have used RCfeedback from input Bus to Fb pin(1Kpf and 2.7M) for THD reduction which varies between 8% and 15%. We tried all tricks bur the variation remains the same. Is there anything we can do for tighter output Current regulation? Please advise.

hi,

You may try to use the fine tuning section on Linkswitch-PH PIXLS Designer software to optimize output current regulation by changing RV1, RV2, or RFB1 and RFB2.
