PI expert transformer design

Posted by: diplexer on

I designed two power supplies using PIExpert. One for 220V AC input with TNY284, other for 60V AC with TNY290. Output is 5V, 1A in both cases. For 220V PIExpert suggested 1x25 AWG for output stage of transformer, for 60V it was 2x25 AWG. Why double wire? Output power is the same for both cases. For 60V: primary N1=60, secondary N2=4. For 220V: primary N1=90, secondary N2=6.

Hello Diplexer,

Thank you for considering Power Integrations in your design.

My initial guess is that because the secondary turns is fewer, the transformer is considering 'double wire' to make the fit better along the length of the core (less free spaces).

Also, how do you specify the input voltage? In PI expert, we usually input a range, with a minimum and maximum AC input voltage. What is the minimum and maximum voltages you used for 220Vac and 60Vac?

Thanks.

Hello.
50-70 VAC for 60V design.195-265 VAC for 220V design.
Thanks for support.

Also,
E16/8/5 for both cases.4 turns for 60V, 7 turns for 220V. I think your guess is right.
Thanks
